Robert Matzen is co-author (with Michael Mazzone) of Errol Flynn Slept Here: The Flynns, the Hamblens, Rick Nelson, and the Most Notorious House in Hollywood (GoodKnight Books, 2009). His previous print work includes many articles about classic films and stars and a biography of actress Carole Lombard. He appeared as an expert on the subject of Lombard in the BBC2 television documentary, Living Famously: Clark Gable (2005), and on the BBC4 radio documentary about Errol Flynn, Robin Hood and the Cuban Revolutionaries (September 2009). Matzen was an acquaintance of several associates of Flynn, including second wife Nora Eddington, biographer Tony Thomas, ghostwriter Earl Conrad, actors Victor Jory and Steve Hayes, and leading man Robert Stack.

The work of Robert Matzen as a screenwriter and director includes a trio of independent feature documentaries about young George Washington. When the Forest Ran Red: Washington, Braddock, & a Doomed Army (2001) was broadcast across the United States and Canada and earned recognition from the American Association of Museums and the Smithsonian Institution. His other feature documentaries include George Washington's First War (2003) and Pursuit of Honor (2006). Matzen has also written and directed several films for federal government clients, including the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. In several films for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), he interviewed astronauts and top government officials at Kennedy Space Center, Johnson Space Center, and NASA Headquarters in Washington D.C. A package of these programs earned national broadcast in 2009. Matzen's work as a filmmaker gives him unique insights into the world of Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Hollywood's studio system in the Golden Era.
